Listen to This!

The idea is this: each month I pick some names from the MMM mail list (there's over 800 to choose from).  I ask each to send back a YouTube link (or just the name of song and artist) of a piece of music that you love and would like to share.  If you can't wait to to asked...just send it in!

  1. James McMurtry, Canola Fields.  "I love the musical genres of singer/songwriter/folk and have been a James McMurtry fan since I first discovered him in the early 90’s. A brilliant storyteller and talented lyricist, I have followed him ever since. This song is on his latest album and I absolutely love it, listen to the lyrics!. Hope others do to!!" (submitted by Betsy Boyer).

  2. "Check out Haim's live version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well'. First heard the original on WB's The Big Ball vinyl sampler album back in 1970. Then, 55 years later was thrilled to watch these three ladies nail it with their cover. Check it out (and the original pre Nicks/Buckingham FleetwoodMac)". (submitted by Bill Bley).

  3. "Carlos Santana, Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile), specifically on the Moonflower album.  45 or so years of listening and I still can’t hear it without crying.  Carlos feels purely vulnerable and connected to the live audience, and masterfully expressive of the breadth and depth of human emotion.  Without a single word he tells a story that touches places in my soul that I still can’t name, but leaves me full of hope and fight.  If I only had a time machine I’d set it for that concert (in time to buy tickets!)" (submitted by Ben Johns)

  4. Abby Lincoln, If I Only Had A Brain. "I like how Ms. Lincoln reinvisions this funny classic from The Wizard of Oz, as a blues piece. Her voice has the clarity and tone of a trumpet, and she's clearly having a bit of fun with the song." (submitted by Tom Irvine)

  5. The Wolves "Watchhouse" "This band used to be called Mandolin Orange.  Ndugu poised and still before she touched the keys, (and after), is amazing." (submitted by Ann Diamond).

  6. Carrie Newcomer "The Gathering of Spirits"  "This song honors all the people I love so dearly.  Those who have transitioned and those who share my every days."  (Submitted by Boo Schneider)

  7. Patrice Rushen, "Lover Man"    "I love how this trio has taken a song usually heard as a sad and sultry ballad and turned it into a rollicking and funky latin tune.  Featuring the great Stanley Clarke on bass". (submitted by George Schneider)

  8. Jon Batiste, "I Need You"   Exuberance distilled down to a wonderful dance and song  (submitted by Thom Stone)
